Hot in Here

•  Rejuvenate your body, mind and soul with Power Yoga!  •

Spotted @  Power Yoga Canada Etobicoke
                  1092 Islington Ave

Who:  Marlison, Ang and a handful of familiar PYC faces and new yogis attended Leandra’s 75 minute morning class. Leandra, a rockstar yogi, is the Co-Owner of PYC Etobicoke, our Ambassador at lululemon Sherway Gardens, and a past educator to boot! (She is someone you definitely want to get know!) A passionate teacher, athlete and friend, Leandra inspires you to be your best on and off the mat!

What:  Power Yoga 75 with Leandra
This hot vinyasa class will bring you through a flow of sun salutations (A & B), sitting and standing poses, openers & back bends, ending with a period of meditation. The class is fun and full of energy as everyone is focused on deepening their practice or mastering that challenging pose (cough cough handstand). Leandra encourages doing things at your own pace and level, while also pushing you to go deeper and step out of your comfort zone. With the addition of music to assist our flow, Leandra takes time to personally assist and adjust students in their poses.

Wore:  Alison sported the barely-there, uber-lightweight Practice Freely Tank and classic Wunder Under Crops - her crop of choice for hot yoga! She kept her hair and sweat in check with her favorite Bang Buster Headband. Alison got down on the Towel Mat, a fusion between a microfiber towel and rubber mat, which keeps her hands from slipping during downward dog and is safe for the washing machine, too!

Marlene kept cool in the airy No Limits Tank, one of her favourite tanks to wear in and out of class, and gave her legs room to breathe in the Boogie Short. She set her intention on The Mat. The great thing about this mat is that there is no need to bring a towel along, because it has a polyurethane coating that soaks up sweat and prevents slipping!

When:  Leandra teaches a variety of yoga classes in the morning, afternoon and evening. Check out PYC Etobicoke's schedule for more details on a particular class, date or time.

 Why Power Yoga:
It's relaxing. It's energizing. It's strengthening. With power yoga you’re guaranteed to feel better at the end of a practice than before you began. Yoga is designed to make you feel great in your body, mind and soul: each practice focuses on strengthening and opening the body, breathing from the soul, and setting an intention in the mind and the heart. By removing limitations and providing clarity, you will leave with more than just a sweaty mat, but rather peace of mind, better health and a greater enthusiasm for life.

Hot yoga is great because it helps students to sweat out toxins while allowing them to safely enter deeper poses or stretches. And take it from Alison when she says that you will never experience a sweat like a hot yoga class - she thought a three-hour hockey practice (without pucks!) was the sweatiest it could get, until she stepped into a yoga studio with the heat turned up to 105ºF!

 Still Skeptical?
  • Not the biggest fan of yoga? Neither is Marlene - she would much rather be doing a strength training class than stretching it out. Power yoga is great though, because it is that it is more fast-paced than a typical yoga class and challenges you to try more advanced poses. She was amazed by how fast the class flew by and wouldn't mind catching another 75 minute class one day!
  • Yoga is for everyone! Are you a gumby? Can you barely touch your toes? Do you love the burn of “utkatasana”? Or Is “utkatasana” just gibberish to you? Perfect, you’ll fit right in! At PYC you’ll meet girls and guys of all ages and skill levels at each practice. What’s great is that everyone leaves their ego at the door. There are modified positions to suit all levels of experience, and hey, don’t be afraid to take child’s pose or savasana if you need a breather.
  • PYC is a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. The PYC community is just as fun as it is supportive, with a sense of camaraderie that you can feel the instant you walk through the door. At PYC, everyone is one big family and they're waiting to welcome you with open arms!

What Goes Up, Must Come Down

• Feel the burn with a full-body Gravity workout! •

 Spotted @  RPM Total Fitness
                  2968 Dundas St. W

*Additional parking lot available across the street

Who:  Marlison and Victor attended a packed 10 person Gravity class with Elyse.
Elyse is a canfitpro FIS, Zumba instructor and healthy cooking connoisseur, with the goal to achieve her Pilates certification this year as well. As the newest member of the Gravity Strength Training team she loves teaching Gravity, because "It really is for everybody. At one end you can help someone rehab an injury, or at the other kill it with a high resistance 'face melting' workout! I have definitely noticed myself getting stronger and more defined by taking Gravity machine classes. It works!!" Ditto, Elyse!

(Note: As Gravity enthusiasts, Marlison recommends checking out all of the Gravity instructors.. they're each individually awesome and will kick your butts!)

 What:
Warm up: Squats and One-legged Squats
-Lunges alternated with Pull Ups & Chin Ups (including plyometric variations)
-Lat Pullovers with a Crunch & Tricep Press Downs
-Side Lunges & Forward front raises with Chest flies
-Knee Crunches, Plank & Pike
Phew!

Wore:  Alison kept her cool in the lightweight Pump It Up tank (with a detachable bra), and inherently moisture wicking luxtreme crops.
Marlene was stealth in the versatile Cool Racerback paired with the classic Groove *R Short.
Victor fit right in sporting the ultra light and breathable Light As Air Short and anti-stink Metal Vent SS.

When:  RPM offers a handful of 1 hour drop-in classes available each morning and evening. Be sure to call in ahead to reserve a spot!

 Why Gravity:
Gravity is the ultimate total body workout, focusing on the legs, arms, back, chest and abs. The work out consists of ~1 min reps for each movement, repeated 2-3 times. Short bursts of movement, holding positions for long durations and single sided movements add to the intensity of the work out. We think it's a great way to get that lean machine body!

 How It Works:
The main component of the machine is a "glideboard" that slides back and forth on rails attached to the central tower. The glideboard itself weights 37 lbs and the tower has 22 levels. Rather than weights, you are working with your own body weight, pull of gravity, plus the weight of the glideboard and can alter the intensity with the tower incline (with each level you move up, the load increases by 2%). With the incorporation of a squat stand, lat bars and a cable system, it’s easy to target different muscles and change between exercises seamlessly.

 Still Skeptical?
  • With over 200 possible exercises on the machine, the options are endless, ensuring that you won’t get stuck in the same old routine. You definitely hit every side of every muscle - or at least that's what we feel!
  • All the workouts are scalable. The great part about using one machine is you can increase or decrease the incline (resistance) to cater to your strengths and weaknesses. Weight bars can also be added for increased resistance. The adjustable incline means Gravity welcomes all levels, from beginners to Hulks! Marlene suffers from shoulder pain from her past swimming injury and loves the scalable option to use it more as a rehabilitative exercise.
  • Gravity is a group setting with the feel of private training. You get to push yourself individually on your machine, but in a small class setting, it's a motivating environment as everyone is doing it together.
Warning: You will feel sore after a Gravity class!

When:  Drop-in classes are available on the hour, every hour.
            6 am to 8 pm (Mon-Fri) & 10 am to 2 pm (Sat & Sun)

 Why CrossFit:
CrossFit is a functional fitness program that incorporates 10 elements:
1. Agility                   6. Power
2. Balance                 7. Accuracy
3. Strength                8. Coordination
4. Cardio                   9. Flexibility
5. Speed                   10. Stamina

The CrossFit method is a way to build whole-body functional fitness coupled using various calisthenics, free weights, gymnastic rings, kettle bells, and pull-up bars. The goal of CrossFit training is to prepare an individual for the most physical challenges in life by creating the “Quintessential Athlete.”

 Still Skeptical?
  • CrossFit keeps it exciting and fresh by posting a WOD every morning - no two workouts are the same!
  • CrossFit is great for newbies, just ask Alison! The drop-in classes have a small student to instructor ratio and Paul focuses on mastering the technique.
